Alumni Week - April 19-25, 2021

The Nik Madsen memorial bench in Crown Meadow

Thank you to each of you who joined in the events of Alumni Week 2021!

Topping the overall leaderboard in the Alumni Week Active Slug Challenge were the following:

  • CP Pierce with 3,200' elevation gained and the most points earned!
  • Tony Dianda with 1,000' elevation gained.
  • Robin Williams with 559 steps walked.

At the Rec Alumni Story Swap, we enjoyed numerous stories of hilarious, heartfelt and unexpected Rec adventures from the past thirty years. We also viewed a brief video of the newly installed Nik Madsen memorial bench. We shared reflections from Nik's life and the ongoing gift of the Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment for Whole Heart Leadership. Inspired by Nik's parents, Pam and Lars Madsen, the bench is located on the west edge of Crown Meadow and includes these words from Nik's Natural History Field Quarter journal:

"Love and appreciation for the natural world comes from experience."

The connections we share through our experiences with the Rec live on. Until next time, be well and stay connected.

April 25, 4pm: Rec Alumni Story Swap, via Zoom

Join Adventure Rec alumni, staff and students for a week of outdoor adventure and reconnections. Enjoy the week-long Active Slug Challenge, and hike, bike, paddle, dance, surf, journal and soak up the outdoors. Wherever you are, get moving, then share your daily adventure with other alumni, staff and students. Along the way, reconnect with your extended Rec family and revel in Rec-style rejuvenation.

Conclude the week on Sunday, April 25, with a casual, virtual Rec gathering, swapping stories with old and new friends as we begin building a digital Rec story archive. Do you have a story to share? Please say "Yes" in the RSVP below and be a part of sharing the Rec story!

On April 25, we'll also share, via photos or video,  the newly installed Nik Madsen memorial bench. This bench will be located at the east trailhead to the Nik Madsen Seep Zone Interpretive Trail in upper campus.
