Rec Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Team

REDI Team, 2022-23

Who is REDI?

The Rec Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity (REDI) team is a group of students and staff who are committed to building and continuing to promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity at Adventure Rec at UC Santa Cruz. Our mission is to create a sense of belonging in the outdoors for everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, economic status, or disability. We strive to be a group of learners who are committed to better understanding ourselves and the greater outdoor community in order to serve the UCSC community. We strive to understand  the needs of those who have historically and currently face barriers to participating in outdoor activities and create a more inclusive and welcoming environment within the Rec.

We acknowledge and thank our predecessors, Anti-Oppression Action at the Rec (AOAR), for creating the foundation and resources for REDI to come into existence and continue their work. Here is a synopsis of AOAR’s work. We hope to remember where this work started and how REDI continues to build off the resources and commitment of AOAR.

REDI Goals/Aspiring Projects

  • Lessons and resource sharing
  • Outreach to other organizations across campus to form relationships and partnerships to actively invite and include students from different demographics and groups
  • Creating resources and trainings for Rec Leaders (and other outdoor leaders) to include cultural and historical teaching topics into their trips
  • Creating community beyond the titles of “Rec Leader” and “Volunteer” to form a larger community of outdoor enthusiasts through the Rec Community Spreadsheet

What we acknowledge about the outdoor industry at large (why REDI is important)

  • Historically the majority of wealthy white male presence in the outdoors
  • Lack of representation of PoC, LGBTQ+, low-income (etc) in outdoor spaces
