On September 30, the UC Santa Cruz community rallied together to participate in Giving Day. On that single day, 4,748 donors contributed $609,107 to support programs all across campus. The Department of Athletics & Recreation joined in the enthusiasm, with 745 unique donors raising $88,302 for Athletics and Recreation programs. Funds raised will further the department’s vision of student leadership and inspired competition. Thank you to all of the students, alumni, staff and friends that made Giving Day such a success for the department and the students!

Here are a few highlights from Athletics & Recreation’s Giving Day projects:

  • The Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment for Whole Heart Leadership: $34,505 to support student leadership at Adventure Rec; 229 donors; first place in the All Day Challenge for the most number of unique donors; second place in the Mid-Day Motivator, funded by Chancellor Cindy & Jim Larive; second place in the Early Riser Challenge;
  • Women’s Ultimate Club: $10,965 to attend future tournaments and pay for jerseys; 16 donors;
  • Men’s Rugby Club: $10,015 for future travel, training and equipment expenses; 77 donors;
  • NCAA Athletics: Six teams combined to raise $17,785 to support future competitions, with Track & Field and Men’s Soccer each raising over $5,000.

While Giving Day focuses our attention on giving financial support, it was also a day of giving us many reasons to celebrate together. Communities re-connected, joyful stories were shared, and students’ passion for their programs were rekindled. As we all experience layers of crises and unrest, Giving Day became a day to rejuvenate our spirits and inspire us for the year ahead, whatever it may hold. Thank you!
