Lifeguard

The lifeguard position is one of the most important positions in the Athletics and Recreation department. This position supports the academic mission of UC Santa Cruz by providing outstanding recreation and leisure experiences and fostering a culture of engagement and community. The lifeguard position goals are to provide experiences that encourage leadership and team work, develop competence in critical assessment skills, make new friends, enhance participant’s connection to the community and environment, and to have fun.

Duties

The work location is the Slug Recreation Complex East.   Lifeguards are responsible for providing the safest environment for our patrons. In addition to enforcing and educating patrons about the pool rules, lifeguards will also set up and take down (pool covers, lane lines and trash), performing light facility maintenance tasks; and other duties as assigned.  All lifeguards are required to complete monthly staff trainings.

Qualifications

  • Current certification in Lifeguard Training from a nationally recognized organized organization.
  • Current certification in CPR/AED and First Aid.
  • Successful completion of MANDATORY SKILLS TEST is required prior to hiring.

This includes a timed swim, treading water, and performing rescue skills.

  • Oxygen Administration, Title 22 (First Aid for Public Safety Personnel) certifications are preferred. Prior experience in lifeguarding is also a plus.

ACADEMIC YEAR EMPLOYMENT

Positions for the Academic Year will be posted on the Career Center website at the beginning of September.  Mandatory staff training will be held every quarter, the day before classes begins.

SUMMER EMPLOYMENT

Positions for Summer Employment will be posted on the Career Center website at the end of March.  Try-outs will be held in mid-April.  Mandatory staff training will be held mid-June and is 24 hours in duration.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Ever wanted to become a lifeguard? Are you looking for a part-time job during the school season?
